Returning for its second year at Piscataway Park, Celebrating the Potomac is a celebration of Potomac River heritage, as part of a weekend of events hosted by the Potomac River Heritage Tourism Alliance commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Anchoring these events in Prince George’s County, which includes a War of 1812 Encampment and Commemoration at Fort Washington Park, will be a special visit to the Potomac River by the Pride of Baltimore II – a reproduction 1812-era topsail schooner privateer and the type of vessel that helped America win the War of 1812 and secure its freedom.

Admission to the event includes Pride of Baltimore II deck tours where you’ll learn about the critical role that these topsail schooner privateers played in the war, music from the era performed by Jennifer Cutting’s OCEAN, theatrical performances, Piscataway Park hayrides, and shore side Captain talks. Be adventurous and book a War of 1812 kayak tour with Atlantic Kayak Company; additional fee required. Picnics are welcome, but food will also be available for purchase. Confirmed food vendors include Doug the Food Dude, serving preservative-free Caribbean-inspired food. Dunkirk Heavenly Chicken and Ribs, serving barbecue and traditional fair foods, and Maryland Indian Tourism Association’s mobile restaurant, Wipantin, serving contemporary Native American cuisine.

Tickets for the evening sail aboard the Pride of Baltimore II have sold out. The ship will set sail from the fishing pier at Piscataway Park promptly at 6pm.

Following Celebrating the Potomac, Atlantic Kayak will host a moonlight kayak tour from 6:30pm-9:30pm. The tour will depart from the Piscataway Creek Discovery Center at Fort Washington Marina, featuring views of the Pride of Baltimore II with Mount Vernon in the background and the Washington Monument off in the distance. Tickets are $65/person and are available on the Atlantic Kayak website.
