The Shed Style emerged from the designs of modern homes in the 1960s and 70s adding sharp angles and sloping roofs. The look follows the examples of outdoor, rustic, mountain-lodge buildings, with board, brick, or wood shingle exteriors, and accompanying landscape schemes featuring pine, redwood, cedar, or other coniferous trees and shrubs. The style captured its place during the 1970s, in sync with an emerging environmentalism and return-to-nature culture.
The Shed Style is easily identified by a juxtaposition of boxlike forms capped with single-sloped shed roofs facing a variety of directions. The style spread quickly through the United States after the construction of the Sea Ranch Lodge condominium complex in Sonoma County, California in 1965. Robert Venturi’s design for his mother’s house, the Vanna Venturi House, greatly influenced and promoted the style on the East Coast.
Shed style homes are identified by the multiple roof architecture and multi-geometric shapes. Roofs are typically built with wood shingles and slope in different directions with little effort toward symmetry

The exteriors of this building style are typically built with wood and stone as well as touches of textured concrete. Doors are recessed and windows are usually small, allowing for expansive wooden surfaces.
The house at 460 Farmington Road West follows the general pattern. Large expanses with vaulted ceilings and skylights make use of passive solar design while adding to an informal lifestyle.
