NEW LISTING IN THE MOYAONE RESERVE – and now at a lower price!
5 bedrooms, 3 full baths, 5 acres, asking $500,000

First-time listing of a beautiful custom-built home on 5 acres in the Moyaone Reserve! This home has been loving home of the owners for the last 50 years.
The publication, Five Acres of Independence, detailed an approach to living comfortably off a parcel of land as small as 5 acres. The owners were familiar with this so when they saw the newspaper article in 1964 promoting the sale of 5 acre properties in the Moyaone Reserve they did not hesitate and bought one.
A 1937 aerial survey photo shows the lot and land as cultivated fields. In 1964 this was still true with much of the lot still an open field and the Potomac could be seen in the distance. The lot, still mostly open has been home to horses, there’s fruit orchard with approximately 35 trees and a large fenced garden that was laid out in 1966 has been in continual use since.
The house was built in 1964-65 from the plans of architect Herman York, a residential home specialist with over 3/4 million houses built. He was reputed to be the originator of the split level design that was common during the 1950’s (okay, maybe not so great today but very cool in it’s day).
Mr. York designed houses for what he called, gracious living, fusing modernist ideas with just enough Americana flavor. This house was in his ranch series – informal and comfortable with a long low profile. The rooms are all large with plenty of windows. The foyer and bedroom hall insures privacy for all areas.
There is a total of five bedrooms – three down and two upstairs, with three full baths. The house has over 2,300 square feet, the porch and patio add 400 square feet, and the basement adds another 1,200 sf.
The family room has a brick wall from floor to ceiling with a gas log that operates with a remote control. You’ll also notice a built-in Dutch oven unit to the right of the stove. Room trim and mantle were hand-made by the owner from black walnut lumber from his wife’s family farm. The family room opens to the Florida room…
And to the kitchen.
The kitchen, which is big enough to eat in, was remodeled a few years ago by Bray & Scarf and includes Corian counter tops, a Sub Zero refrigerator, hand-painted Italian tiles on the walls below the cabinets.
The dining room has an early American mural and an impressive chandelier. Black walnut trim is hand-made. The large living room bay window offers a fine view of the property. Custom shades in both rooms.
The basement is incredible. It includes a large main room that has barn wood paneling, a furnace room/workshop (the work bench and drill press stay), a former dark room, a laundry room, and a wine cellar and storage pantry.
The basic barn was built in 1970 and an addition and shed later. It has about 1,300 sf, including the shed. It was made from locally sawed wood. It has a stable (now used for storing the tractor), a wood shop area, and three other rooms. The loft was used for storing hay but is now empty. A pasture area is fenced in on three sides.
And there’s more but maybe you should give us a call and arrange for a visit. Sheryl Romeo Real Estate, 301-848-1127, sromeo@bright.com
